Shanghai, Hu for short, is situated on the estuary of China's Yangtze River. It is the largest industrial city in China, covering an area of 5,800 square kilometers (2,239 square miles), and containing a population of 18.7 million, including a migrant population of 2 million.
Originally, Shanghai was a seaside fishing village. In time, its gradual development was followed by it being granted County status on August 19th, 1291 during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). Today's Shanghai is a multi-cultural metropolis with both modern and traditional Chinese features. Bustling Shanghai has much to offer even the most descriminating traveler, providing more than a mere taste of China, both modern and old.
Serving as the largest base of Chinese industrial technology, an important seaport and China 's largest commercial and financial center, Shanghai has recently drawn the attention of the whole world.
Modern Shanghai has three key areas of interest to the visitor: The People's Square along the Huangpu River provides a number of sightseeing, business and shopping opportunities to the interested traveler; the city's Cultural Center hosts a considerable number of public activities and community facilities; And finally Sheshan , Chongming Island , Dingshan Lake and Shenshuigang Area serve as the main entertainment and holiday tourism district of the city.
Known as "The Paris of the Orient", Shanghai is a shopper's paradise. Among the several "musts" for tourists is Nanjing Road. Huaihai Road intrigues those with modern and fashionable tastes, while Sichuan North Road meets the demands of ordinary folk. In addition, the Xujiahui Shopping Center , Yuyuan Shopping City , and Jiali Sleepless City are thriving and popular destinations for those who are seeking to buy something special as a memento of their visit.
A wide variety of cuisines can be found in Shanghai and today the city offers a plethora of culinary delights focusing on the traditions of Beijing , Yangzhou , Sichuan , Guangzhou as well as its own local dishes. The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region , bordering to the north both the Republic of Mongolia and Russia , is the widest province in China (by its latitude). It is the third largest Chinese province (over 1.1 million square kilometers or 424,736 square miles) but not very populated. The province has about 24 million inhabitants. Many ethnic groups are living in this area including Mongolian, Daur, Oroqen, Ewenki, Hui, Han , Korea and Manchu. Hohhot is the capital of Inner Mongolia .
But what is most attractive about Inner Mongolia is its natural beauty. Vast grasslands, including the Xilamuren Grassland, Gegentala Grassland and Huitengxile Grassland are all good places for a appreciating the vast and open terrain Mongolia has to offer. The mushroom-like yurts, bright sky, fresh air, rolling grass as well as flocks and herds moving like white clouds on the remote grassland, all combine to create a pleasant and idyllic landscape for the traveler to appreciate. While visiting Inner Mongolia you may try different activities such as Mongolian wrestling, horse & camel riding, rodeo competitions, archery, visiting traditional families all while enjoying traditional Mongolian singing and dancing.
