Come to Beijing to learn the martial arts of Wushu, Qigong and Taiji Quan (Taichi Boxing) from Chinese national champions and world renouned experts. Known in the West as Kung Fu, Wushu martial arts includes traditional and modern styles as well as internal and external forms.
Objectives
Taking GCE's unique Wushu Program, students will quickly learn the arts of Wushu, Qigong and Taiji Quan via class instruction, after class training and extracurricular activities. GCE offers a wide range of styles in all disciplines.
Martial arts help to develop students' physical and mental fitness, from strength and coordination to self-control and concentration skills. Training covers balance stances, strength, stamina and flexibility exercises, control and speed, and much, much more.
Course Features

Course Outline
GCE's unique course consists of four main components: (1) class-based instruction, (2) supervised after-class training, (3) chinese exchange programs with Chinese Wushu students, and (4) extracurricular activities. • Training Classes
Classes are taught by some of China's most prominent martial arts masters, including former National Chinese Wushu Champions. They are dedicated to providing expert guidance and training to students ranging from complete beginners to advanced students participating in National Wushu competitions.
Classes are held at the Institute of Physical Education, the leading institution of its kind in the country. Students train alongside local students attending the Institute's prestigious Wushu program. Whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced student, GCE's course has plenty to offer you.
The course is mainly based on modern Wushu styles. Disciplines include Changquan (the long fist), Nanquan (the southern fist), Daoshu (the broad sword), Jianshu (the long sword), Gunshu (the staff), Qiangshu (the spear), Taiji Quan (Taichi Boxing), Taiji Swordsmanship, Nan Dao (the southern sword), as well as other internal martial arts like Qigong. Advanced students can learn the International Compulsory Routines as set by the China Wushu Association. These include Taolu (Competition forms) and San Shou (Sanda), a full contact combat style also known as Chinese kick boxing. During the application process, prospective students should indicate which form of Wushu they wish to study. Professional instructors will first assess those requesting advanced levels.

Changquan can be practiced with or without weapons. It includes routine exercises and free sparring, and incorporates kicks, punches, throws and lock techniques. |
| NANQUAN (The Southern Fist) |
Nanquan originated in the Southern Shaolin Temple. It emphasizes speed and consists of close range hand combat techniques combining footwork with kicks. |
| DAOSHU (The Broadsword) |
Daoshu focuses on sweeping and spinning movements as well as defensive and offensive sword techniques, like blocks and thrusts. |
| JIANSHU (The Long Sword) |
Jianshu focuses on speed, spinning and continuous movements as well as stabbing and slashing sword techniques. |
| GUNSHU (The Staff) |
Gunshu focuses on attacking techniques like strikes, thrusts, jabs and swings using the staff. Practitioners can expect to develop great speed and strength. |
| QIANGSHU (The Spear) |
Qiangshu focuses on defensive and offensive techniques like side-blocks, thrusts and strikes using the spear. |
| SANSHOU (Sanda) |
Sanshou is a full contact combat style. Participants must use protective gear. Techniques include kicks, punches, seizes, and throws. |

DRUNKEN STYLE, PRAYING MANTIS (Tanglang quan), BAGUA ZHANG, TUMBLING BOXING (Ditang quan), SHAOLIN QUAN (Shaolin boxing) and a range of weapon styles. |
| TAIJI QUAN (Taichi Boxing) |
Taichi Boxing dates back to the 8th Century. There are several schools, including the Chen, Yang, Wu and Sun. The art involves graceful, continuous movements combined with the control of breathing. Participants can expect to improve their balance, flexibility, muscle tone and coordination, as well as their general sense of well-being. |

| QIGONG |
Qigong is an internal martial art that focuses on breathing exercises. It has evolved from an ancient Chinese therapy and stimulates the movement of Qi (chi) around the body, increasing vitality and improving health. |
• Supervised After-Class Training
GCE's supervised after-class training sessions give students the opportunity to practice what they have learned in class. The optional training sessions are supervised by Wushu masters.
• Exchange Program (Wushu, Chinese Language and Culture)
Students can pair up with Chinese students to exchange martial arts tips, language and culture. Such exchange programs have sown the seeds of many lasting friendships. Students can meet at mutually convenient times.
• Extracurricular Activities
Through these free, twice-weekly activities, students can further their knowledge of Wushu disciplines as well as other aspects of China's fascinating culture.
Wushu-Based Activities
- Optional martial arts activities include Taiji quan and Qigong. Activities are usually held in the afternoon.
Non-Wushu-Based Activities
- Chinese massage/Chinese Herbal Medicine: These classes are a window into ancient Chinese ideas about the human body and illness. Students gain an understanding of how maladies are diagnosed and treated using herbal medicine and massage therapy.
- Traditional Chinese Painting: Held by master Chinese painters, students can delve into a world of watercolor painting, as practiced during the days of China's ancient dynasties.
- Chinese Calligraphy: These classes help students to learn the rules and techniques behind written Chinese in an artistic and fun way.
Special Features
GCE's students are completely immersed in Chinese martial arts, culture and life. Below are some of GCE's course's special features:
• Shaolin Temple Weekend
Students taking part in a course lasting eight weeks or longer are invited on a tour of the Shaolin Temple in the Songshan Mountains of Henan ( home of Kung Fu).
• Activities with Native Chinese Speakers
These include activities like sports (basketball, bowling, etc) and social activities (karaoke competitions, games nights, banquets, movie nights etc).
• Sightseeing programs
GCE's program includes regular weekend tours of Beijing's major historical and cultural sites, including the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace, to name but a few. Students can gain a deep understanding of Chinese culture through these fascinating, free trips. Optional trips further a-field are available for an additional fee.
Combined Chinese WUSHU ¡§C Language Course
This program suits students who wish to learn both Wushu and the Chinese language. The language course helps students develop their listening, reading, writing, grammar and pronunciation skills, and, of course, their ability to converse in the language. The 45-min classes are held by qualified, experienced teachers from the Institute.

Accommodation
GCE offers students excellent accommodation options, both on- and off-campus. Students can choose from staying with a host family, on-campus, in an apartment or in a three-star hotel room.
VISAS
Students should apply for an F-class visa issued by their local Chinese embassy/consulate. F-class visas are typically issued for one, three or six months, depending on the duration of the course. Visa extensions can be organized where necessary. Some embassies will issue an L-class visa for entry into China. This can then be converted to F-class upon arrival, once enrollment is completed and program fees are paid.
